news update 2014

Report from SHARON ALLENTUCK, President, National Council of Jewish Women of Canada:

At the time of writing this report, I have been president of NCJWC for about 3 weeks. Marni Besser resigned in July and I agreed to carry on as president. I was installed at the Annual General Meeting that took place in Toronto.

Our active sections in Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Toronto have programming and projects in their communities. National is an umbrella organization and the officers and board provide direction and assistance to the sections and their leadership.

For example, Organ Donation in the Jewish community is a National program and some of the sections have offered programming to their members and the community at large on this topic. This is but one example.

I am very pleased that following the ICJW Executive meeting in New York; Robyn Lenn will be visiting two Canadian sections. She will be meeting with the Toronto section and Toronto Jewish community leaders. She will then fly over 3 time zones and celebrate Vancouver Section’s 90th anniversary at the Van Dusen Gardens. They will be celebrating their pioneers, programs and future. I am delighted to accompany her on her cross Canada trip.

One of my goals is to ensure that our National web site is up to date. We have a few volunteers who are diligently working on this project. Another goal to reach out to our members where there are no longer active sections, such as Montreal, Calgary and Ottawa. Along with our officers, we are going to try to re-engage them in NCJWC.
