The 13th European Conference of the International Council of Jewish Women took place in Brussels in March, entitled: "European Women in Intercultural Dialogue - Perception and Reality".
The 13th European Conference of the International Council of Jewish Women was organized by the ICJW European Regional Committee in cooperation with Conseil des Femmes Juives de Belgique (Liga van Joodse Vrouwen van Belgie) ICJW’s Belgian affiliate.
The first day focused on The Necessity of Dialogue, with sessions on “European Jews and Multiculturalism: Inclusion/Exclusion, discussing the conditions and need for involvement indialogue, education and training; and on “Women’s Contribution to Intercultural Dialogue.” Guest speakers included Gabriella Battaini, Director General of Education, Culture and Heritage, Youth and Sport at the Council of Europe and Co-ordinator of Intercultural Dialogue at the Council of Europe, and ProfessorThomas Gergelyfrom the Department of Communication at Université Libre de Bruxelles and Director of the Institute for the Study of Judaism.
The theme of the second day was What Next? with a panel entitled “All Different - All Equal,” featuring three women of different cultures speaking about their life experience and hopes for the future. This was followed by interactive workshops on “Identity from the Inside Out,” organized in partnership with the Jewish Contribution to an Inclusive Europe (CEJI), to enable participants to explore their own experiences and reactions to those who are “different.” CEJI also ran a Training Session.
The Conference concluded with a session on “Perception, Reality and Application”; a session of recommendations; and a Gala Dinner, with guest speakers Mrs. Tamar Samash, the Israeli Ambassador to Belgium, Mrs. Frédérique Ries, Deputy at the European Parliament, and Baron Julien Klener,President of the Belgian Consistoire.
