new zealand parliament commits to holocaust education

The Council of Jewish Women in New Zealand was among the organizers of the national UN Holocaust Remembrance Day event for 2012 at the Holocaust Memorial in Karori and in the Wellington Parliament. The event was entitled 'Justice & Accountability After the Holocaust' and took place on Friday 27 January. It was organized in association with the Wellington Holocaust Research & Education Center, the Wellington Regional Jewish Council, Bnai B'rith, Wellington City Council and the NZ National Commission of UNESCO.

Shirley Payes reports that the event was a really good example of the Jewish community, the general community and the Parliament working together. Speaking at the Reception in the Grand Hall of the Parliament, the Hon. Christopher Finlayson, New Zealand's Minister of Culture and Heritage, announced that the Government had donated $50,000 towards Holocaust education and the preservation of the Holocaust sites.
