icjw at the csw in new york

ICJW will be participating this year in three impressive events with several outstanding NGO partners at the 58th Commission on the Status of Women in March 2014.

The Priority theme for 2014 is “Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls.” Two of our programs will address this theme and one will address the review theme: “Access and participation of women and girls to education, training, science and technology, including for the promotion of women’s equal access to full employment and decent work.”

Half the Sky is Not Enough! Propelling Women and Girls Upward from MDGs to SDGs will highlight three global initiatives that were created during the time of the MDGs and promise to catapult women and girls upward throughout the post-2015 development period. These initiatives are The Equal Futures Partnership encouraging the economic empowerment of women and girls; Change.org which  has made possible the surge of online petitions on human rights abuses against women and girls; and the Games for Change online technology game Half the Sky Movement designed to create social change. We will be partnering with the Armenian Relief Society and Soroptimist for this event.

Partnering with Solar Cookers International, ICJW is sponsoring a parallel event entitled Achieving Equal Access for Women to Technology and Employment. We will address solar cooking as a way for women to use technology to improve their quality of life and to be kind to the planet. The combination of modern engineering and the power of the sun leads to a new technology with the potential to make a real difference in women and children’s lives in less developed countries. Other speakers will address novel ways in which women have pursued careers in science and technology in spite of the lack of equal access.

ICJW is one of a group of cosponsors of a UN Watch-sponsored event Promoting Gender Equality and Empowering Women Living in Traditional Societies. This event will emphasize aspects of MDG 3 (Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women) by giving voice to female victims of honor abuse.

We look forward welcoming our ICJW sisters to NY to attend CSW events with us and we will be sure to update you further at the end of March about CSW 58 outcomes and ICJW’s success at drawing record crowds to its joint programs.
