unesco commemorates the holocaust

EVENTS ORGANISED BY UNESCO, PARIS, TO MARK INTERNATIONAL DAY OF
COMMEMORATION OF THE VICTIMS OF THE HOLOCAUST

On the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the
Holocaust, of January 27th 2015, UNESCO has organized a series of events, which were attended by a very large audience, including numerous members of the French Affiliate.

On Wednesday 21st, the Premiere screening of two episodes of a new series of the French TV channel France 2 called "The destruction of European Jews" was presented.

On Monday 26th, a concert was given by the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Fredיric Chaslin, featuring: Ode to Peace by Frederic Chaslun, Symphony n° 13 in B flat minor (Babi Yar) by Dimitri Shostakovitch (based on poems by Yevgeny Yevtushenko) and Suite Yiddish by Norbert Granzberg.

The main event was held on January 27th; it started with a live transmission of the official ceremony of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the camp of Auschwitz Birkenau, which was followed by a round table discussion, entitled "Culture, Remembrance and Transmission " with the participation of the writers Jean Claude Grunberg, Daniel Mendelsohn and Ori Orlev.

In the evening, a ceremony was organized that was dedicated to the Memory of the Holocaust victims.

From January 26th to February 10th, the public can also visit the following UNESCO exhibitions:
  •      Shoah by Bullets: 10 years of investigations by Yahad in Unum;
  •      Auschwtiz-Birkenau 1940-1945 Concentration camp and killing centre by the Memorial of  the Shoah;
  •      The liberation of the camps by the Memorial of the Shoah and Unesco.
