icjw at the un csw 59 discuss grassroots activism
14 ICJW women will join the 8,000 women participating in the 59
United Nations Convention of the Status of Women in New York, opening on March 8 – International Women’s Day 2015.
The theme of the NGO CSW Forum will be Beijing +20, marking twenty years since the UN’s Beijing Platform for Action which promised so much for women’s rights. This is being billed as “a golden opportunity to scale up and speed up implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA) and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). They will launch a global campaign designed to highlight the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda and strengthen the capacity and leadership in communications and social media to reach out to the next generation of young men and women, boys and girls.
As part of the CSW NGO event, the International Council of Jewish Women will be co-hosting a side event together with the UN Association Council of Organizations and Academia Mexicana de Derecho Internacional, entitled: “Every Woman, Every Right, Everyone is Responsible, The Time is Now: Feminists Working with Civil Society”. The event will take place at the Guild Hall, Armenian Convention Center in New York on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 8:30 a.m.
The speakers at the event will be: Jean Shinoda Bolen, MD and author, who will discuss how grassroots activism motivates political will; Dr. Pam Rajput, Chairperson of the Indian Government’s High-Level Committee on the Status of Women, who will address the role of women in sustainable development; and Ani Zonneveld, Founder and President of Muslims for Progressive Values, who will discuss "How Sharia can be a source for women's rights and how to challenge religious dogma".
The panel will emphasize how feminists working at the grass roots with civil society will help advance women in the post-2015 world. The moderator will be Dr. Tolonda Tolbert, Director of the Inclusive Leadership Initiative for Catalyst's Global Member Services.
ICJW is one of 771 organizations that have signed the Political Declaration on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women -
